Have you ever done something you have not done before? Of course, you have!
And we need the courage to do that.
Without courage, nothing new happens.
Without courage, we are stuck where we are.
But there is a powerful anti-movement or anti-force. And that is the “fear of loss”. It is one of the most potent drivers of our behaviour. We tend to do almost everything to “not lose” what we have.
There was an interesting experiment. A group of people was divided into two subgroups. Each person got a cup - yes a regular coffee cup.
Half of them were asked: “For how much would you sell the cup?”
And the other half were asked: “For how much would you buy the cup?”
The first group valued the cup significantly higher, more than 30%.
Because they owned the cup.
So, what is the challenge now in our VUCA world (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous)?
Volatility means that there are more opportunities and more risks.
When we value the risks higher than the opportunities, we are getting into a dilemma because we are more and more afraid of taking the risks.
I think we need to rethink courage and how we deal with courage.
Ask yourself: When have I been really courageous? But more importantly, ask yourself, how you can demonstrate courage today!
Let me know what you think.
