According to a study by McKinsey, we will see a significant shift in the skills we need in the workforce.
Between 2016 and 2030, the report expects the following shifts:
physical and manual work was by far the biggest portion in 2016 with 203 billion hours across the US and 14 western European countries. This is expected to decrease by 14%.
Basic cognitive skills were at 115 billion hours and are expected to decrease by 15%.
Higher cognitive skills (creativity, complex information processing and interpretation) were at 140 billion hours and are expected to increase by 8%.
And the final two are the most interesting:
Social and emotional skills were at 119 billion hours and are expected to increase by 24%!
And even more dramatic is the situation with technological skills including basic digital skills. They were at 73 billion hours in 2016 and are expected to grow by 55%.
So, investing in emotional and technological or digital skills are the two main drivers for future success.
In my formula for success in the digital age, they make up two main components:
Mastery of the digital age = emotional intelligence + digital literacy + high performance habits.
