You have probably heard about the “confirmation bias”.
That means, when we have an opportunity, we tend to find information that confirms our opinion. Everything else is “blacked out”.
Same goes when you consider buying a red BMW. Suddenly, a lot of red BMW’s are driving around.
This bias is tricky because it limits our thinking.
Why is ist even more problematic today?
Because it is so easy to find confirming information for any opinion. And social media tends to show us more of the information we already like. So we receive even more confirmation that we are right with our opinion.
But in an ambiguous and complex world it is key to listen to alternative views and to be willing to change opinions - if needed even daily.
This is achieved by adopting and exercising an active open mindset.
Possible questions you can ask yourself:
What is it what I don’t see?
Why is my point of view not correct?
What are the merits of my opposite’s view?
What are your triggering questions to stay open-minded?
